TL;DR: Renamer.ai v5 supports Local and OpenAI/Gemini BYOK, but its published cloud plans still have monthly file allowances. Zush is an alternative for mixed Mac and Windows files with unmetered paid renames ($48 one-time), 145+ Naming Blocks, local AI, and documented RAW/design/video coverage.

Quick answer: the best Renamer.ai alternative for most people is Zush. It covers the same core job, renaming files by what is inside them, without a monthly file cap. Its one-time plan is $48, it runs AI locally if you want, and it handles files Renamer.ai does not list, like RAW photos, Photoshop, Figma, and Sketch files, and video.

Renamer.ai is a document-focused renamer. Reasons to compare alternatives include its cloud file allowances, recurring billing, and specialist formats missing from its public list. Local and BYOK are no longer missing features: v5.0.0, released September 25, adds both, plus reusable folder structures and synced templates.

Review updated: October 5, 2026. Written by the maker of Zush. Renamer.ai, NameQuick, and FilesDesk facts were checked against their linked primary sources; RenameClick retains its September 24 price check and Renamed.to retains its September 22 check. This is a documentation comparison, not a shared performance test.

Why people switch from Renamer.ai

Renamer.ai runs as a desktop app (Mac and Windows) and on the web. It focuses on documents: PDFs, Office files, images, and vector formats, with OCR at the core and Magic Folders for automation.

Its pricing is where most people hit a wall:

Renamer.ai planPriceFiles per month
Free$025
Paid tiers$9.95 to $99.95 per month200, 1,000, or 5,000

The published cloud tiers are metered. Renamer.ai now offers downloadable local models and OpenAI/Gemini BYOK; its pricing page does not clearly separate the license allowances for those modes. Confirm those terms before assuming that every local or BYOK operation consumes a cloud credit. At an unchanged $9.95/month, five uninterrupted years of cloud Pro total $597 before taxes or discounts.

1. Zush: best overall alternative

Zush is a desktop app for Mac and Windows that reads each file and proposes a descriptive name. You review the whole batch, then apply it. Rename History keeps every original name, so a batch can be reverted later.

What makes it the closest replacement:

  • No file cap. Paid PRO is unmetered, at $10 a month or $48 once. The free start includes 50 renames.
  • Four ways to run AI. Zush Cloud AI, your own key for Gemini, OpenRouter, OpenAI, or Claude, or local models through Ollama or LM Studio.
  • Wider file coverage. Beyond PDFs and Office files: RAW photos, HEIC, design files (PSD, Figma, Sketch, AI), 16 video formats, and audio.
  • Naming you control. Templates and 145+ Naming Blocks (date, vendor, amount, client, document type) keep names consistent.
  • Folder monitoring. New files in Downloads or a scanner folder get named as they arrive, like Magic Folders.

Where Renamer.ai is still stronger: it has a web app, so you can rename without installing anything. Zush is desktop only. Full breakdown: Zush vs Renamer.ai.

Organize a mixed batch by content

Zush also includes AI folder sorting (beta). Use Auto or write Folder rules, for example “Group invoices by company, receipts by month, and videos by topic.” Filename Templates and Naming Blocks control what each file is called; the folder rule controls where it belongs. This extends the desktop workflow beyond naming new arrivals.

Choose a Destination folder, or keep the source folder as the root. Enable Reuse existing folders to prefer suitable folders already there; Zush can create a new one when nothing fits. In a manual batch, review both the suggested names and folders before applying. To rename in place, leave sorting off and keep the original destination.

Save the sorting settings in a Template and assign it to Monitor for new files directly inside the watched folder. This does not reorganize files already processed. Test the Template in a manual batch first. See the folder sorting guide for the setup and monitoring scope.

2. RenameClick: best for a bundled local model

RenameClick downloads a local vision model on first run, so it renames offline without setup. It covers images, documents, and audio with local transcription, and its Auto Flow can rename and move files. The free tier currently allows 100 successful renames or moves a month.

As checked September 24, 2026, Pro is $8 plus VAT per month or $36 plus VAT lifetime; verify the live checkout. Video, RAW, and design files are not in its published format list. See Zush vs RenameClick.

3. FilesDesk: best if you already have an API key

FilesDesk uses credits: 1 credit per filename suggestion. Managed plans are $8 a month for 500 credits or $20 for 2,000. The $40 lifetime plan is unmetered but requires your own API key or a local model (Ollama or vLLM).

It supports images, PDFs, Office files, video, and audio, with Watch Folders, undo, and Organize Flow for conditional moves, copies, tags, and comments. Local options include Ollama, LM Studio, and vLLM. Important limits: subscriptions cannot use BYOK/local AI, credits reset monthly without rollover, and the self-managed license covers one device with 12 months of updates. See Zush vs FilesDesk.

4. NameQuick: conditional document workflows

NameQuick combines AI naming with Rules that can move, tag, or archive files after renaming. Managed plans start at $12 a month and are metered (500 to 10,000 renames). The $69 Self-Managed license removes metering if you bring a key or run Ollama, LM Studio, or MLX.

NameQuick ships on Mac and Windows; MLX, Finder tags, and comments are Mac-only. Its managed trial currently includes 70 renames over 14 days and requires a card; self-managed starts with 30 free renames. Managed suggestions count when generated, even when not applied, and monthly unused allowance expires. See the current product and pricing page and Zush vs NameQuick.

5. Renamed.to: best for cloud storage workflows

Renamed.to works inside Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive, plus an API and Zapier or Make integrations. There is no desktop app and no local processing.

It charges per document: $9 for 1,000 or $49 for 10,000, with 50 free. It focuses on documents (PDF, Office, scans). See Zush vs Renamed.to.

Which alternative fits you?

  • Mixed files, no monthly cap, optional local AI: Zush.
  • Offline AI with nothing to configure: RenameClick.
  • You already pay for an OpenAI or Claude key: FilesDesk lifetime, or Zush with BYOK.
  • Conditional document moves on Mac or Windows: NameQuick, with Mac-only Finder actions.
  • Everything lives in Google Drive or Dropbox: Renamed.to.

FAQ

Can Zush sort files into folders as well as rename them?

Yes. Its optional AI folder sorting is in beta on Mac and Windows. Choose Auto or write Folder rules, select the destination, and review both names and groups in a manual batch. A sorting-enabled Template can also process new files directly inside a monitored folder; it does not reorganize files already processed. Leave sorting off and keep the original destination for naming only.

What is the best alternative to Renamer.ai?

Zush, for most people. It renames files by content on Mac and Windows, has no monthly file cap on its paid plan ($48 one-time or $10 a month), supports local AI, and covers RAW photos, design files, and video.

Is there a free Renamer.ai alternative?

Zush includes 50 free AI renames, and RenameClick currently gives 100 successful renames or moves a month for free. For unlimited free use, an open-source command-line tool like ozgrozer/ai-renamer with Ollama works if you are comfortable in a terminal.

Does Renamer.ai work offline?

Yes: Renamer.ai v5 documents on-device processing through downloadable local models. Zush connects to Ollama or LM Studio; RenameClick offers a bundled model. Test the selected local model on representative files and confirm the license terms before choosing.

Is Renamer.ai a one-time purchase?

Its public pricing lists recurring cloud subscriptions, not a one-time purchase. Local/BYOK license terms are not clearly separated there. Zush, RenameClick, FilesDesk, and NameQuick publish one-time options with different AI and update entitlements.
